What is the difference between day and night cream?

Here we’ll go into more detail about what day and night cream do, the differences between them, and tell you more about how Florena’s moisturising products can form a complete skincare routine.

Day and Night Creams - What are the differences?

Even the most seasoned skincare experts will have found themselves asking the question “What is the difference between day and night cream?” The short answer is that they have different purposes in your skincare routine, and you should be using both to ensure you’re giving your skin all the nourishment it needs. We'll take a look over what the main differences are, and why you should add it to your morning and evening skincare routine.

What does day cream do?

There are many types of day cream to suit different skin types, but its basic function is to perform these tasks:

  • Hydration: keeping the water content in the epidermis constant. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, which is why it's so important to keep it hydrated
  • Preparation: preparing the skin for the application of make up by giving you a smooth base
  • Protection: many day creams (including Florena’s creams) help to protect the skin from free radicals, and external factors such as pollution
In other words, day cream applied in the morning sets the skin up to face challenges of the day ahead.

What does night cream do?

At night it’s a different story.

  • While we’re getting our beauty sleep, the epidermis goes into overdrive to repair and regenerate itself after everything it’s been through during the day.
  • Its main aim is hydration, which should constantly be kept at an optimal level. For this reason, night cream often has a rich texture and needs longer to fulfil its purpose of deep hydration.
Below we'll go into more detail on the differences between day and night cream, how to include them into your skincare routine and what day and night creams Florena has to offer.

What is the difference between day and night cream?

The main differences between day and night cream are related to consistency and antioxidants.

Night cream is often richer than day cream due to the skin’s need for intense hydration while you sleep. It will generally be absorbed by the skin more slowly to allow it to work throughout the night.

Day cream is lighter and the skin absorbs it more quickly, making it more suitable as a base for flawless make up.

Day creams often include antioxidants for skin to fight free radicals. Many night creams also contain antioxidants, but their function here is to help your skin regenerate from existing damage caused by free radicals.

How should I use day and night cream in my skincare routine?

1Cleanse your face

Start the day by cleansing your face. You may also want to use a toner to tighten your pores.

2Apply your day cream

Then apply your day cream to hydrate and protect your skin. Massage it in gently, using the fingertips in a circular motion. Focus on the areas of your face and neck that are most prone to dryness.

3Follow a similar process for your evening routine

Follow a similar process at night time, just before you go to bed. After cleansing and toning, apply your night cream and let it do the hard work while you’re snoozing!
