What is an antioxidant?

So what is an antioxidant? In simple terms, it’s a tiny molecule that fights oxidation in your body. Oxidation is a necessary function of the human body that happens at the cellular level and involves the formation of highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. If you have too many of these free radicals in a certain part of your body, they can cause a process called oxidative stress, which is harmful. Oxidative stress affects the activity of all skin cells, making the signs of ageing more visible.

One of the effects of excess free radicals is their ability to modify the structure of the skin. They’re able to speed up the metabolisation of collagen, which is the protein that keeps the skin looking young, fresh and smooth. The end result of this process is wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.

Of course oxidation is a natural result of the passage of time, but it can be worsened by certain factors such as pollution, stress, and habits including smoking, alcohol intake and consumption of high-fat and sugar foods. Sun damage is also a major contributor to oxidative stress. It’s a great idea to try and limit these factors where possible, as well as including antioxidant skincare products as part of your skincare routine - which is where Florena can help!

Antioxidant Benefits for Skin

In skincare, antioxidants have different methods of stopping free radicals. Our range of moisturisers, face oils, cleansers and masks can help fight them and give tired skin a radiant and smooth appearance. These are the main benefits of antioxidants for the skin:

  1. Antioxidants can reverse signs of ageingAs previously mentioned, excess free radicals (the result of oxidative stress) cause collagen to be broken down too quickly. Fighting these free radicals with antioxidant cream can slow down the ageing process and even reverse signs of ageing, leaving your skin looking younger and firmer than ever.
  2. Antioxidants can protect against the sun: The anti-inflammatory properties of antioxidants can help protect your skin against the sun, which has the double benefit of preventing skin damage and the pain of a bad sunburn! Of course you should still use your regular spf, but it’s reassuring to know that you have extra protection.
  3. Antioxidants can help to brighten and even skin tone: Uneven skin tone is a common effect of sun damage, caused by oxidative stress. Using antioxidant creams can help to reduce dark spots and prevent further damage.

Antioxidants in Florena Fermented Skincare Products

Which antioxidants are used in our skincare products?

Our anti-ageing range has a strong focus on antioxidants for skin. One of our key ingredients is naturally-occurring Vitamin E, a dietary essential which is renowned for its ability to protect the skin from free radicals.

Honeysuckle is another important antioxidant found in some of our products, such as the Anti-wrinkle Day Cream. Honeysuckle flower extracts are rich in flavonoids, which are known to reduce oxidative stress. For complete 24h antioxidant skin care, combine using our day cream in the morning with our Florena Antioxidant Night Cream in the evening. The combination of powerful natural ingredients in our antioxidant creams will nourish and hydrate your skin whilst brightening and smoothing your complexion.

Our natural fermentation process allows us to get the most out of our ingredients by breaking them down into small parts so that the skin can absorb them more quickly.

How can you get enough antioxidants in your diet?

Alongside seeking out products containing antioxidants for skin, it’s important to make sure that your diet is rich in these tiny molecules.

The good news is that they can be found in most foods in varying quantities. If you eat a diet full of fruit and vegetables, you’re likely consuming plenty of antioxidants.

It’s all about living a balanced lifestyle - everything in moderation!

Foods Containing Antioxidants

  • Some examples of great sources include leafy greens such as kale, spinach and broccoli.
  • Fruits such as blueberries, grapes and red berries like raspberries and strawberries.
  • Sweet potatoes.
  • Coffee, tea (especially green tea) and dark chocolate are also known to be full of antioxidants.
