What is an antioxidant?

So what is an antioxidant? In simple terms, it’s a tiny molecule that fights oxidation in your body. Oxidation is a necessary function of the human body that happens at the cellular level and involves the formation of highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. If you have too many of these free radicals in a certain part of your body, they can cause a process called oxidative stress, which is harmful. Oxidative stress affects the activity of all skin cells, making the signs of ageing more visible.


One of the effects of excess free radicals is their ability to modify the structure of the skin. They’re able to speed up the metabolisation of collagen, which is the protein that keeps the skin looking young, fresh and smooth. The end result of this process is wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.


Of course oxidation is a natural result of the passage of time, but it can be worsened by certain factors such as pollution, stress, and habits including smoking, alcohol intake and consumption of high-fat and sugar foods. Sun damage is also a major contributor to oxidative stress.
